Suze Orman is a financial adviser who rose to fame as the author of the #1 New York bestseller The 9 Steps To Financial Freedom and The Courage To Be Rich, Following numerous appearances on Oprah, CNN and NBC, Suze now hosts her own television show on CNBC. Suze started off as a broke waitresses and had many financial difficulties before she had her success:
Suze worked for seven years as a waitress after college before she had the courage to apply for and get a job as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch in northern California. It’s possible that Suze Orman was hired for the financial adviser role because the firm wanted to fill a women’s quota but Suze was on her way. To celebrate Suze and her mother bought some new business suits and a fancy watch so that she could look the part of a rich stockbroker.
Despite feeling out of place among such wealthy confident brokers, this fast paced environment suited Suze very well and she did very well. As she learned the ropes and built her customer base, she was able to buy her mother a luxury car and go on exotic vacations. Soon she was offered a position as a vice -president of investments at Prudential-Bache.
Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny
Suze decided to help others by forming her own business, the Suze Orman Financial Group. Just a few months after she opened her doors with a partner, her business had been robbed by an employee. All her files, programs and confidential agreements had been taken. Suze was in shock and tried to recover her business from this setback. It took three years and many days in court to resume her life and practice. This is when she lost her courage.
Full of rage, self-pity and terror, Suze doubted her abilities to be a financial adviser and even thought about going back to life as a waitress. She actually thought that she did not deserve success and that she was suppose to be poor.
Suze got scared. She continued to live a lavish lifestyle and treat friends to movies and dinners. Her friends and clients did not know she was spending more money than she was making. When she had nothing left, Suze refinanced her house and accumulated credit card debt.
The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke
Suze Orman had a turning point when it dawned on her that the waitress serving her at a Denny’s (and even when she was a waitress herself) was richer than her and more importantly happier than her. Suze questioned who she really was and how she could stop this downward spiral. When she was a poor waitress, she had spirit and courage but as someone who ran a business, she lived in fear.
Suze learned that she had to feel good about herself and have the strength and courage to do what’s right and only then would she begin to take financial control of her life. Spreading this message became her passion and Suze decided to help women (and men) deal with their money worries and fears so they could become strong investors. Her successes lead to book deals and her best selling books has made Suze a national celebrity who is followed by millions of readers and viewers.
